Selection criteria

To be a successful UWC student, a candidate needs to comply with the following requirements at the moment of submitting an application:

• Be a citizen of Ukraine (foreign nationals residing in Ukraine can only apply through Global Selections Programme). Applicants will need to provide one of the following:
  • Ukrainian passport, or
  • A birth certificate confirming the birth on Ukrainian territory as determined at the moment of declaring independence in 1991, in case obtaining a passport is not possible due to security or travel logistics reasons.
• Be a 10th or 11th grade student: candidates need to be in their final year of secondary school, or in their first or second course of professional college if they left secondary school after 9th grade. We also accept applications from gap year students.
• Be 15-17 years old: candidates must be born between September 2, 2006 and September 1, 2008.
• Demonstrate English fluency: English is the primary language of study and is used to communicate in most settings. To ensure a candidate's ability to succeed academically and socially, our national committee considers language skills as one of the selection criteria.
• Demonstrate high academic achievements: academic and extracurricular activities in UWC colleges are extremely rigorous. To ensure a candidate's ability to succeed in all aspects of life, we judge candidates based on their past academic achievements.
• Be well-rounded and open-minded: to successfully navigate life in UWC and represent Ukraine well, candidates need to be well-versed in many aspects of life and open to new ideas. Candidates are also expected to have an understanding of effective representation of Ukraine abroad.
• Demonstrate understanding and implementation of UWC ideals: international college is much more than a regular school. It's a place for people who can see the world as it is and strive to make it better for everyone.
• Demonstrate the ability to communicate effectively and be a good leader: the ability to present ideas to peers with different academic, cultural, and religious backgrounds is a key aspect of intercultural understanding. The ability to be an effective leader will also help candidates apply UWC ideals in real life.
